What’s a wiki?

The Social Work Wiki is a development of the idea underpinning Wikipedia – that is, an online encyclopaedia that anyone can add to, either by entering a whole new entry or by developing an existing one. The Social Work Wiki is a smaller-scale version, an online encyclopaedia of social work and social care. It has been designed as a learning facility that will grow and grow over time for the benefit of the Social Work Focus community.

How do I use it?

To make use of the Social Work Wiki, enter in the ‘Search’ box the term you are interested in. If nothing is to be found there, why not be one of the pioneers and add something? Or, if you do not have the required knowledge yourself, is there someone you could invite to make a contribution?

How can I contribute?

To make a new entry, type the term you wish write about in the ‘Search’ box. If an entry appears, you will not be able to provide an additional one, but you may edit the existing one if you are able to improve it or extend it in some way. If your search produces no entry, then a box inviting you to make the entry will appear. You can then proceed to write your entry. Please check what you have written very carefully in terms of grammar, punctuation and spelling before you save it.

To edit an existing entry, click the EDIT button.

Are there any restrictions?

Entries must be:

  1. Original – not simply copied from other sources;
  2. Referenced – state your sources (for guidance on referencing, use the Harvard system - see an existing wiki entry for guidance);
  3. Verifiable – do not make statements that cannot be checked;
  4. Neutral – we recognise that pure objectivity is not possible, but please be as neutral and objective as you can;
  5. Non-commercial – while it is acceptable for authors to refer to their own writings where appropriate, entries should not be used simply to market products or services.

* Please note that only registered members of the community can edit the wiki or add a new entry to it. *
