Theorizing Social Work Practice

Theorizing Social Work Practice is Neil Thompson's latest book. It challenges the traditional notion that we should 'apply theory to practice'. Instead, Neil argues in this brand new text, we should start with practice and try to make sense of it by 'theorizing practice' - that is, by drawing on our professional knowledge base in order to develop a fuller understanding of what we are dealing with. The book forms a trilogy with his bestselling Understanding Social Work: Preparing for Practice 3rd ednĀ and Practising Social Work: Meeting the Porfessional Challenge published in 2009. This important new book also builds on discussions in The Critically Reflective Practitioner (Sue Thompson and Neil Thompson, 2008). All four books mentioned are published by Palgrave Macmillan and are available form the Neil Thompson Bookshop (http://astore.amazon.co.uk/neilthomp-21/).

Theory for Practice
written by Kathleen Mulvey, April 07, 2010
Neil,

I'm looking forward to reading this book as someone who very much at times feels caught in between the two worlds which you describe. It's now firmly on my summer reading list. One of the developments I would like to see thou is for the social work degree to evolve along the lines of the nursing degree with practice placements throughout the course. I think especially first year gives a great opportunity for those undertaking the degree to discover or reaffirm their knowledge of the world of social care which is out there. I also think it is vital that student social workers/future social workers have firm roots in every level of practice.

I always find it amazing and quite concerning that people can seperate theory from practice or vice versa. Hopefully your book if not bridging the gap will at least start the discussion.

Kathleen
