Understanding Social Work by Neil Thompson (Palgrave Macmillan). This book quickly established itself as a bestseller when it was first published in 2000. The second edition, published in 2005, built on that success. The third edition is now available and has already proved to be a success. Earlier this year we saw the publication of Neil's Practising Social Work: Meeting the Professional Challenge (also published by Palgrave Macmillan). This books develops some of the themes introduced in Understanding Social Work. Next February we will see the publication of a further book which will then, in effect, make a trilogy of key texts. Theorizing Social Work Practice will complement the existing two books and provide a sound foundation for high-quality social work based on a good understanding of theory and a commitment to critically reflective practice.
